What people said about the 2009 Bay Area Takeover:
“Definitely one of the best regional events put on every year.” — DoneWaiting.com
“Get on the list!” — Austin Music Source
“Another day, another round of tough choices to make…but then again the lineups at the Bay Area Takeover and NPR’s Music For the Right Brain are nothing to scoff at either.” — Ear Farm
“Just had to share this tonight – I had a blast at the Beauty Bar for the Bay Area Takeover party.” — i.PooF
“[I]ndependent producers and the heads of small labels have found ways to do more with less.” — Austin American-Statesman
“[M]ake sure you RSVP to this one” — Procrastination at its finest…
“I usually avoid seeing local bands at SXSW, but I’ve never seen Themselves or Wallpaper, who, to once again cut to the good part, may end up being my favorite part of the week.” — The Onion AV Club
“[S]trives to represent the best and brightest of our beloved scene at SXSW” — The Deli SF
“[W]e caught Thee Oh Sees who were absolutely killing it under the tent. The trio was set up on the floor, rocking out with manic energy and attracting a full crowd as the next act, Vetiver, looked on with an expression suggesting, ‘How the fuck am I going to follow this?’” — Mission Freak
“John Dwyer (formerly of the legendary noise-rockers Coachwhips) had his new band Thee Oh Sees in top form, kicking it DIY noise-band style—playing on the floor, not the stage, and bypassing the house PA for the more intimate tone of amps blaring. The attitude here was encapsulated by Dwyer’s remarks halfway through the set: ‘I wish it was dark…and I wish this tent was on fire.’” — Cokemachineglow
“Oh well, find places with cheap drinks and good bands and who’s complaining. I was urged to the Bay Area Takeover party just to see Thee Oh Sees, but was pleasantly surprised by the inside stage’s Two Sheds. The singer had the blues bad, and the others in the band knew their way around a similar kind of folk—so everything worked to their advantage. I’m not going out on limb to give them the Black Keys, but for 12:00 on a sunny Thursday, it was unique.
It was Thee Oh Sees, however, that cannot be missed the rest of the week. Setting up on the concrete, not the stage—for maximum effect? For start time efficacy? It gave the aura of a Lightning Bolt show… in 2009. Jon Dwyer remarked that he felt like a ‘condom full of dogshit’ and that he was ‘sweating battery acid’ before ripping through 20 minutes of the finest garbage punk I’ve seen so far. Thee Oh Sees seem like Dwyer’s vision coming to an apex, the noise and fury of everything he’s done before stretched into an all-star cast of stooges.” — The Agit Reader
“San Francisco rocks Beauty Bar on Thursday. Last year, they…had really good food and great atmosphere, so we’d encourage you to RSVP.” — Austinist
“Two Sheds came up next. I love these guys, but I hadn’t actually seen them in a while. They started off with ‘Good Intentions’, their excellent track on the latest Bay Bridged comp and they ended with ‘It’s Hard’, my favorite track by them and a long time song obsession. A great set by this band. I left thinking that I shouldn’t forget that this band is incredible.” — ipickmynose
